The Seminar

The seminar is especially designed to equip trustees, leaders and those who work with children and vulnerable adults within churches and organisations.   This is a concentrated course presented by David and Pauline Pearson using a variety of presentational material, including DVD clips.

The training covers areas including:

  • Understanding the nature of abuse
  • Definitions and how to recognise signs and symptoms of abuse
  • Sex offenders and grooming
  • Helping a child or adult talk about abuse
  • Working with statutory agencies, including Social Services, Police, the Independent Safeguarding Authority, Local Authority Designated Office and the Charity Commission
  • Safeguarding policy issues
  • Managing sexual offenders
  • Safe recruitment and supervision of workers
  • Safe practice in working with children
  • Helping children to develop self-protection skills

The seminar is inter-active and opportunity is given for delegates to ask questions or raise issues of concern on any area connected to child protection and good working practice.

Presenters

David and Pauline Pearson are the founders of CCPAS and have been leading the ‘Facing the Unthinkable’ seminars for 20 years.  David has been involved in child protection for more than 40 years.   He worked as a senior Social Services Manager and court-appointed Children’s Guardian as well as providing independent advice to courts and social services on child protection issues.   David is a Director of CCPAS.

Pauline originally qualified as a nurse, and went on to work with adolescents in a residential capacity for 13 years.  She has extensive experience of direct work with children and adults who have been abused and is a qualified counsellor.

Cost

The cost is £19.50 per delegate and includes a workbook (value £5).  If you cannot afford the suggested contribution, please send whatever you can.   There are also two special group offers:

Small Group Offer – 5 places for £75

Large Group Offer - 15 places for £200 (payment for this offer has to be received in full on booking)

We are normally unable to give refunds, but we may be able to transfer you to another seminar if we are notified at least 48 hours before the event.

If you are booking late (less than three days before the event) please phone Karen on 0845 120 45 50, Option 3 to ensure there is space and you receive all of the relevant information.

Arranging a new venue

Seminars are generally hosted on a shared cost basis by local churches, church bodies or organisations and are open to all.   The format remains broadly the same, though it can be tailored if need be to suit the organisation/church hosting the seminar with, for example, a follow-on sessions specifically for the organisation concerned.   Allowing for a minimum of four and a half hours a seminar can be run over half a day on Saturdays or Sundays or over two consecutive evenings during the week. Please follow the procedure ‘How to arrange’ on the right if you wish to arrange a seminar in your area.
